This movement sought to modernize traditional techniques while retaining their core values, moving away from purely academic styles towards a more expressive and personal approach.
His early work demonstrated an exceptional command of sketching and composition, qualities that would become hallmarks of his mature style. He was deeply influenced by the teachings of Somei YUKI, a prominent Nihonga painter who emphasized meticulous observation and the importance of capturing the essence of subjects rather than simply replicating their appearance. The mid-20th century witnessed a significant shift in Sugiyama’s artistic practice.
