Biography | Javier Orfón

Javier Orfón was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico (1989), a city grappling with the echoes of colonialism and burdened by persistent crises—themes that resonate deeply within his artistic vision. From childhood, he possessed an instinctive connection to the natural world alongside a profound fascination for ancestral crafts—influences that would indelibly shape his distinctive sculptural practice, coupled with meticulous illustration and pioneering printmaking techniques. His academic journey commenced at Universidad de Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture in 2013. During this formative period, he immersed himself in intensive studio exploration, engaging in spirited debates concerning contemporary art’s role in confronting societal challenges. Notably, he participated in the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2022), fostering collaborative endeavors and embracing experimentation within a stimulating artistic environment—a crucible for honing his creative sensibilities. Orfón's artistic trajectory gained considerable momentum with his third solo exhibition, *El Ojo de Arcilla*, presented at Hidrante Art Space in Santurce, Puerto Rico, in 2020. This event cemented his reputation as a burgeoning talent within the vibrant Puerto Rican art landscape and underscored his unwavering dedication to investigating themes of identity and materiality—a cornerstone of his artistic exploration. Subsequent exhibitions further solidified his presence on the international stage: *La Casa de Las Almas*, curated by Abdiel Segarra Ríos at Espacio Cómplices in Madrid (Spain), 2022; *No existe un Lugar en el Mundo Poshuracán: Puerto Rican Art in The Wake of Hurricane Maria*, showcased at the Whitney Museum of American Art (2022-2023); and *El Momento del Yagrumo*, organized by Marina Reyes Franco at Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico (2021). A pivotal juncture arrived with his selection as a Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellow in 2023—a recognition of his artistic merit that propelled his creative development forward. He was honored to participate in ARCO Madrid (2024), demonstrating the burgeoning global acknowledgment of his singular artistic vision. Currently residing between San Lorenzo and Caguas, Puerto Rico, Javier Orfón continues to cultivate his craft with unwavering passion—a testament to his enduring commitment to translating complex narratives into evocative visual representations. His artistic practice revolves around a meticulous exploration of the interplay between traditional Antillean pottery techniques and contemporary conceptual concerns.
