Early Life and Family Background

Andrea Badami was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on October 27, 1913. His parents were from Italy, and their roots shaped much of his early years. When he was five years old, his father moved the family back to Corleone. He spent the next decade living in Sicily, growing up within the rhythms of the Italian landscape. At the age of 15, he left Sicily and moved back to Omaha.

His path as a painter was shaped by what was absent in his upbringing. He received no formal art education. His parents viewed such training as a waste of time, and so he learned without the guidance of a classroom or a teacher. He developed his own way of seeing, relying on his own eyes rather than the structured lessons of an academy.

Military Service and Life in Nebraska

In January 1939, Badami married Lena Badami. This domestic life was interrupted a year later when he was drafted into the Italian army to serve during World War II. His service took him to Africa, where he was eventually captured by the British. He spent almost six years as a British prisoner of war before the conflict reached its end.

Once the war was over, Badami, his wife, and their two children returned to Nebraska. He settled back into the rhythms of Omaha, finding steady work far from the battlefields of his youth. From 1948 until 1978, he worked at the Union Pacific Railroad repair shop. This long period of labor in the shop provided the stability that defined his middle years in the American Midwest.

Artistic Career and Notable Works

Badami was a self-taught artist who never received formal training. His paintings emerged from a personal vision rather than academic study, eventually earning him international recognition as a folk artist. His brushwork captures specific, often quiet scenes, ranging from religious imagery to simple moments of childhood and nature. Much of his work is held in collections such as the Museum of Nebraska Art.

His output spanned several decades, moving through different subjects and moods. Between 1945 and 1955, he produced Mystical Landscape. Later, his work took on different forms, such as Untitled (Boy with Deer on Horse), which he worked on between 1964 and 1974. In the 1970s, he painted Boy with Dog and Airplane, and by 1973, he had completed Madonna with Child and Squirrel / Untitled.

His later years saw the creation of works like Church and Grounds, painted about 1988. These pieces reflect a life spent observing the world around him, from the quietude of a landscape to the presence of animals and children.

Later Years and Legacy

After retiring from his work with the Union Pacific Railroad, Badami moved to Tucson, Arizona. He remained in the desert landscape of the Southwest until his death in Tucson in 2002. His life in Arizona marked the final chapter of a long path that had taken him from the plains of Nebraska to the mountains of Sicily and through the hardships of war.

His paintings remain in several collections, finding a home in the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens. Among the works held there is his painting Church and Grounds, which dates from about 1988. These pieces continue to exist as physical traces of his perspective, kept in museum settings far from the railroad shops where he spent his working years.
