The Materiality of Presence

Joseph Amar’s work demands a physical confrontation. He did not merely paint; he constructed surfaces that forced the viewer to acknowledge the weight of the medium. Moving between Toronto and New York, Amar developed a practice where the distinction between painting and sculpture dissolved. He relied on the inherent properties of his materials to dictate the final form, a method that stripped away the pretension of traditional representation in favor of a raw, tactile reality.

His approach was grounded in the physical presence of the object. By incorporating found materials, he moved beyond the flat plane of the canvas to create works that possessed a sculptural density. This was not an aesthetic choice made for decoration, but a fundamental necessity of his process. The material was the driver of the work.

Technique and Influence

Amar’s evolution was marked by a shift from the use of found objects to a more disciplined, minimalist dialogue with heavy industrial materials. His process was rigorous and specific, often involving the layering of substances to achieve a particular structural effect. He drew from several key movements and artists to inform this material-heavy language:

In his later years in Brooklyn, his work became increasingly defined by its relationship to minimalism. He utilized sheets of lead affixed to plywood as a base, working the surfaces with graphite, oil pigment, and beeswax. This specific combination of industrial and organic substances created a tension between the permanence of the metal and the malleability of the wax.

A Career Interrupted

The trajectory of Amar’s career was abruptly altered by a 1991 car accident. The collision, caused by a drunk driver, resulted in the death of his wife and left Amar paralyzed from the neck down. This physical limitation ended his ability to produce work, effectively silencing a career that had been gaining significant momentum in the New York art scene. His presence in the art world was felt through his exhibitions at the O.K. Harris Gallery and the Bess Cutler Gallery, and his inclusion in significant curated shows in Germany.

Despite the suddenness of his departure from active practice, his influence remains anchored in the collections of major institutions. His works are held in the Guggenheim Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Carnegie Museum of Art. These placements confirm the weight of his contribution to the discourse on materiality and the physical limits of the painted surface.
