The Experimental Spirit
Born in 1944, John Davidsen was a presence in the Danish art scene who preferred the boundaries of the workshop to the rigidity of the classroom. Between 1961 and 1969, he was a member of the Experimental Art School, a space where the lines between life and art often blurred. This period was defined by a curiosity for the Pop and Fluxus movements, where the act of creation was as much about the social gesture as it was about the physical object. He moved through these years with a sense of play, often engaging in activities that challenged how an artist is perceived by the public.
His work during the late 1960s often took the form of a campaign. From 1968 to 1969, he conducted the Rose Campaign, a series of happenings and printed materials centered around a single, long-stemmed red rose. This was not a traditional exhibition but a way of living the art. He used gold-printed invitations and silkscreen prints to invite people into a world where the artist became a product, or perhaps a style, known as the Gentleman of Roses. It was a way to explore the idea of autonomy through the lens of advertising and social ritual.
Technique and Memory
As his practice evolved, Davidsen moved between different mediums, from the heavy application of oil on masonite to the precise layering of serigraphy. His technical approach often involved a complex series of steps, such as the use of over-, middle-, and underpainting to build depth. In his 1986 work titled "Memory," he utilized serigraphy in shades of green, light violet, and light brown, adding hand-colored touches of red, blue, and yellow to complete the piece. This layering suggests a way of constructing a visual language that is both deliberate and layered, much like the recollections the title implies.
His output was varied, touching upon different aspects of identity and presence. His early work included explorations of body art and even a brief, playful nod to popular culture through a piece titled Playmate's Playboy of the Month in 1969. Whether working with a headless dummy in a tuxedo or a simple oil painting like Lommer I from 1965, his focus remained on the tension between the individual and the roles they inhabit in society.
