Born in Philadelphia, United States, Jake Berthot was an American painter and draftsperson whose work navigated the intersection of minimalism and expressionism. His early career was defined by entirely non-figurative, abstract paintings. During this period, he utilized large shaped canvases and thick, painterly surfaces to express emotion through reductive means. As his practice evolved, particularly after moving his studio from New York City to a rural community in upstate New York in 1994, his work began to incorporate figurative elements. While remaining abstract in character, these later works often drew from the natural environment as their subject, focusing on the volume of light and space.

Berthot's technical approach varied across his long career. In the mid-1970s, he introduced bright colors and geometric forms like rectangular bars and ovals into his compositions. By the 1980s, he expanded his repertoire to include etchings and drawings, often featuring ovoid shapes and quasi-calligraphic markings on gray enamel backgrounds. His paintings were noted for their highly tactile, shimmering, and encrusted surfaces. Throughout his life, he remained dedicated to creating works that refused to grow old, often seeking a balance between systemic structure and felt experience. His legacy is preserved in major institutions, including:
