A Life in Art and History

Jacques Bertaux was a French painter, etcher, and draftsperson born in Harcy, France. A student of Jean-Jacques Bachelier, his artistic journey began with genre scenes, including depictions of hunting and pastoral landscapes, such as his 1786 work Paysage champêtre. As his career progressed, his focus shifted toward the dramatic intensity of battle scenes and revolutionary subjects.

His work often captured the tumultuous spirit of his era, including a large canvas depicting the Prise du palais des Tuileries during the events of August 10, 1792. Bertaux was also a frequent contributor to the Paris Salons, exhibiting various military compositions, including cavalry combats and troop marches. His ability to document significant historical moments is further evidenced by his depiction of the imperial procession for the coronation ceremony in 1804, known as The Crossing of the Pont-Neuf.

Artistic Legacy and Personal Life

Throughout his active years between 1776 and 1802, Bertaux’s life was intertwined with his family and the evolving political landscape of France. He was married to Cécile Françoise Zimmermann, and together they had several children, including Luce-Antoinette-Émilie, Louis Jacques, and Dominique Alexandre. His son, Dominique Alexandre, was a music and painting enthusiast who may have authored the portrait exhibited at the Salon of 1801 under the name Bertaux fils.

Bertaux's repertoire included a wide array of military and historical subjects exhibited at the Salons, such as:

He passed away in Paris at the age of 72.
