A Life Forged in Motion
Novocerkassk, 1898. A young boy displays an unusual aptitude for drawing, a talent noticed by his father, a surgeon. This early spark leads to formal training under a local painter and eventually to the art school in Rostov. The path is interrupted by the heavy machinery of war. In 1916, the draft pulls him into the army. The conflict leaves him wounded and held prisoner by both Austrian and British forces. It is a period of displacement that reshapes his trajectory.
The movement toward Sofia brings a new academic focus. At the Academy of Fine Arts, he finds a way to continue his studies despite the chaos surrounding him. By 1925, the scene shifts again to Milan. He enters the School of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera. Here, the artist meets Julia Ivanovna Lund, a painter of Norwegian origin born in Russia. Their lives intertwine in 1930, forming a partnership that spans decades and includes three children.
The Canvas and the Landscape
His work often captures the quietude of nature and the stillness of specific locales. In the 1930s, landscapes emerge with a distinct focus on northern light and atmosphere. One such piece, Nordic landscape, bears the signature I Karpoff. The brushwork reflects a deep engagement with the terrain, whether it is the snowy expansions of a Russian winter or the crisp air of more northern reaches.
The repertoire extends into the realm of still life and seasonal observations:
- Fiori: A study of flowers from circa 1950, rendered in oil on canvas.
- Winter skiing: Also known as Winter Ship, an oil work from around 1940.
- Paysage russe sous la neige: An oil on canvas capturing the Russian landscape under snow.
Legacy in Collection
The physical traces of his career reside now within institutional archives and private holdings. The Fondazione Cariplo maintains works such as Fiori and Winter skiing in its collections. His presence in the art market is marked by specific auction records, including the sale of his Nordic landscape. He remains a figure defined by his movement through Europe—from the academies of Kiev and Milan to his final years in Milano, where he passed away in 1970.
