Early Life and Education
Bernt Tunold was born on the island of Selja on the west coast of Norway. His family lived on a farm on the church grounds of the island, which included livestock such as cows, a bull, sheep, and goats. During his childhood, Tunold explored the ruins of Selje Abbey, a Benedictine monastery, and later produced drawings and poems regarding the site. He also had access to art within the local church, including portraits and an altarpiece.
In 1895, Tunold moved to Bergen. After attending a school for non-commissioned officers, he began educating himself as a painter. He attended a painting school in Bergen during the winters of 1901 and 1902 under Henrik Asor Hansen. During this time, he also served as a model for the painter Olav Rusti.
Later Years and Work
Tunold's work included depictions of landscapes, portraits, still lives, and interiors. In 1916, he lived in a smoke cottage in Gloppen Municipality, which served as the subject for many of his paintings. He later moved this cottage to Selje. Throughout the final twenty-five years of his life, he traveled through western Norway to paint.
Tunold lived much of his life in Bergen and was part of the city's rural society. He married Edel Prøitz in 1920. He died in Bergen on January 23, 1946.
