Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1975, Marta Lahens Conde’s artistic journey is deeply intertwined with the rich cultural tapestry and complex history of her homeland. From a young age, she demonstrated an innate sensitivity to color, form, and narrative – qualities that would become hallmarks of her distinctive oil paintings. Initially drawn to counseling and teaching art, particularly in Puerto Rico and Cleveland, Lahens’s experiences as an educator profoundly shaped her approach to creating work that explores themes of identity, heritage, and the human condition. Her artistic development wasn't solely a personal pursuit; it was rooted in a desire to connect with and represent the soul of Puerto Rico.
Lahens’s formal training began at the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1993, where she received the prestigious Portfolio Scholarship. This provided her with a crucial foundation in classical techniques and principles. However, it was her subsequent studies at Universidad Interamericana in San Germán, Puerto Rico, culminating in a Master's degree in Painting in 2000, that truly solidified her artistic vision. During this period, she immersed herself in the local art scene, absorbing influences from both traditional Puerto Rican painting and contemporary international movements. The Vermont Studio Center residency in 2000 further broadened her horizons, exposing her to a diverse range of artists and perspectives.
