In this 1937 composition, the viewer is drawn into a quiet, enclosed space where a bouquet of yellow chrysanthemums takes center stage. The flowers are not rendered with delicate precision but through thick, rhythmic strokes of oil paint that emphasize their physical presence. A patterned vase holds the blooms, positioned against a backdrop of a window and a heavy, white curtain that drapes heavily to one side. The light enters softly from the left, catching the ridges of the impasto and casting gentle shadows within the folds of the fabric. There is a certain weight to the scene, a sense of stillness captured through a palette of muted slate blues, deep blacks, and cool greys that allow the saturated yellow of the petals to emerge with quiet intensity.
The artist employs a semi-abstract approach, favoring the materiality of the paint over literal representation. The shapes of the chrysanthemums are rounded and swirling, suggesting movement within the stillness of the still life. This expressive technique creates a tactile surface where the brushwork itself becomes a primary subject. The composition relies on a careful balance of elements:
Created during a period when the artist was a founding member of the expressionist group "The Ten," this work reflects a departure from literal painting. Rather than seeking to replicate reality, the piece seeks to convey a sense of presence through texture and light. The heavy, rugged application of paint suggests a preoccupation with the physical nature of the medium. It is a work of quiet intensity, where the interplay of shadow and light on the textured surface creates a private, intimate atmosphere.

Born in Starokostiantyniv, Russian Empire, Ben-Zion, also known as Ben-Zion Weinman, was a multifaceted artist whose creative journey spanned painting, printmaking, sculpture, poetry, and writing. After traveling to Vienna at age seventeen to study art, he eventually immigrated to the United States in 1920. His early literary efforts included writing poems and fairy tales in Hebrew. As his career in visual arts progressed, he began hyphenating his name, transitioning from his birth name to the moniker Ben-Zion. His artistic practice was diverse, encompassing oil paint, watercolors, and intaglio printmaking, and he later expanded his repertoire to include welded iron sculptures in the 1950s.
Ben-Zion was a founding member of "The Ten," an expressionist artist group active from 1936 until 1942. This group sought to protest the perceived equivalence of American painting and literal painting. His work often featured expressionist reinterpretations of biblical scenes, a theme notably explored in his first large-scale painting, Friday Evening, which depicted a family's Sabbath dinner table. Beyond his own studio practice, he served as an educator, teaching art through the Works Progress Administration at Cooper Union and other locations. His significant contributions to the art world are preserved in numerous prestigious institutions, including:
