Born in Montreal, Canada, Robert Bordo moved to New York to study at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture. His practice has been characterized by a movement between representation and abstraction, exploring themes such as memory, landscape, weather, and mapping. His work has been featured in several public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Hammer Museum. Bordo has received several honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007 and the Robert De Niro, Sr. Prize.

Bordo has held significant academic positions, serving as a faculty member at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York, where he headed the painting program from 1996 to 2017, and as a faculty member of the Bard College MFA painting program.
