The Life of Marius Cazeneuve
Marius Cazeneuve was not a visual artist, but rather a French stage magician and adventurer. Born in Toulouse, he was introduced to the circus milieu by Jules Léotard and developed his skills as a magician. After working with Madrid's Oriental Circus, he returned to Toulouse to serve as an assistant to Bartolomeo Bosco before establishing his own company. His performances took him across Europe, the Middle East, and Northern Africa, leading him to become one of the richest magicians of his generation.
During the Franco-Prussian War, he formed a company of volunteers and served as a captain in the regular French army. In 1886, he arrived in Madagascar at the invitation of Queen Ranavalona III to perform at her court. While performing, he also served as a French intelligence agent. His autobiography, published in 1896, suggested a romantic relationship with the queen. Following the French conquest of Madagascar, he returned to Europe to perform as a well-paid magician and collect works of art. He died in Toulouse.
