Karel Černý was a Czech painter, draftsperson, illustrator, and graphic artist. Born in Brno, Czechoslovakia, he initially trained as a mechanic before attending an evening school for drawing and painting. His talent was recognized early when he was accepted into the second year of the Academy of Fine Arts by Jakub Obrovský. During his studies from 1933 to 1938, he was also supported by the collector Jaroslav Borovička.
