Artistic Evolution and Style
Ernest Albert was a Flemish painter, draftsman, and watercolorist. His artistic training began at the Academy of Fine Arts in his birthplace, Berchem, where he studied under Jef Van der Veken from 1912 to 1918, and later at the Higher Institute for Fine Arts under the direction of Franz Courtens from 1918 to 1922. He also studied woodcarving with Eduard Pellens and drawing in the evening classes of Albert Ciamberlani. During his military service in the 1st Regiment of Cavalry in Brussels, he developed a profound love for animals and horses.
His diverse body of work includes portraits, nudes, still lifes, landscapes, marines, and cityscapes. Following a series of views of the Schelde, his work shifted toward impressionistic color decomposition around 1927. This period, lasting until 1938, is characterized as his dark period due to a heavy color palette. By 1932, his style transitioned toward broad compositions featuring bright colors and sturdy structures. In 1965, he began using a palette knife, creating works that resemble color mosaics, often reworking some of his earlier paintings.
Life and Legacy
In 1934, Albert married Martha l’Homme, a teacher in Antwerp. In 1938, the couple moved to the village of Ponsas in the Drôme department of France, residing in the Château de Fontager. This move brought a brightening of his palette, inspired by the rhythmic, rolling landscape of the region. Following the death of his first wife in 1948, he married Marcelle Breugelmans in 1949.
Albert held significant academic positions, serving as a teacher at the Royal Academy in Antwerp in 1946 and as the director of the Academy in Mechelen from 1949 to 1965. He was a co-founder of the art circle Moderne Kunst and a member of the Als ik Kan circle. After retiring in 1965, he lived in Heide-Kalmthout. His widow donated their home to the municipality of Kalmthout, establishing the Kunsthuis Ernest Albert, which serves as an exhibition space, an atelier, and a venue for concerts.
