          From the artist, Michelle Kalman: The commanding presence of a sculpture reaching nearly five feet pushes the boundaries of ceramics in size and expression. The risk of cracking and collapse is as great as the reward of capturing sumptuous motion in a medium typically seen as rigid and functional. “Reach” demonstrates how more than 700 pounds of clay can be transformed into fluid gestures — one inch at a time, through weeks of patient building and drying. I used my hands rather than tools, molding and smoothing until my fingers bled. I wanted to bring an unabashedly personal, female expression to the mostly male chorus in large-scale ceramics.
