Designer Bibi Russell from Bangladesh was chosen to create a bespoke look for The Commonwealth Fashion Exchange - an initiative for established and emerging fashion talent from across the Commonwealth’s 53 countries to showcase the power and potential of artisan fashion skills to deliver new networks, trade links and highlight sustainability. Bibi Russell has designed a simple formal outfit consisting of a skirt, jacket, and scarf with matching accessories. The look is made from hand-woven Jamdani cloth, which is unique to Bangladesh, and is considered an ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’ by UNESCO. Red has been used to emphasize happiness and joy, the beauty Bibi sees in the villages of Bangladesh. Through this outfit Bibi Russel wants to give her tribute to incredible Jamdani weavers for their magical work.The look was displayed at Buckingham Palace and the Australian High Commission, London. Born in Chittagong, Bangladesh in 1950 to Mokhlessur Rahman and Shamsun Nahar.
Grew up in Dhaka, attending Kamrunnessa Govt Girls High School and later the College of Home Economics, Azimpur.
Pursued formal fashion education at the London College of Fashion, graduating in 1975.

International Modeling Career

Following her graduation, Bibi Russell embarked on a five-year modeling career, working with prominent magazines such as Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and Harper's Bazaar.

By 2004, Bibi Productions employed approximately 35,000 rural weavers across Bangladesh, demonstrating a commitment to economic empowerment through artisanal work.

Global Recognition and Fashion Shows

With support from UNESCO, Russell organized her first European fashion show in Paris in 1996, introducing Bengali aesthetics to an international audience.
Further expanded her global presence with “The Colours of Bangladesh” fashion show in Spain in 1997.
In 2016, she presented a collection at India Runway Week, showcasing the beauty and versatility of Rajasthan Khadi fabric.
Continued to showcase her work at Indian Fashion Weeks in 2016 and 2018, solidifying her influence within the Indian fashion industry.
