The Artistic Evolution of Thomas Nozkowski
Thomas Nozkowski was an American contemporary painter and printmaker. Born in Teaneck, United States, he began his formal training at New York University's School of Education, studying under Robert Kaupelis and Hale Woodruff. While earning his BFA at Cooper Union, he focused on making sculptures before transitioning to painting. His early works were exhibited in group shows at the Betty Parsons Gallery.
In the early 1970s, Nozkowski moved away from large-scale works, reacting against the scale of Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism. He began working on a smaller scale, often using 16-by-22-inch pieces of art-store canvas board. His reputation for evocative drawings, prints, and paintings was solidified through solo exhibitions at the 55 Mercer Gallery and Rosa Esman Gallery, and through the acquisition of his work by The Museum of Modern Art in 1982.
