The Artistic Evolution of Robyn Denny
Edward Maurice FitzGerald Denny, known as Robyn Denny, was a British painter, graphic designer, printmaker, draftsperson, and serigrapher. Born in Abinger, United Kingdom, his academic journey included studies at St Martin's School of Art and the Royal College of Art. Following his graduation in 1957, he was awarded a scholarship to study in Italy. His early work at the Royal College included rudimentary images of heads, characterized by dripped and dribbled paint, alongside abstract collages and large gestural paintings.
His career saw significant shifts in style and color. In 1969, his work moved from rich, dark harmonies to high, bright contrasts. After moving to Los Angeles in 1981, his painting changed radically; his acrylic Moonshine drawings incorporated scratch marks, leading to large monochrome paintings where concentrated clusters of scratching rested on a thin horizontal datum line. His public art includes colored lines installed in the Embankment tube station in London in 1985.
