A Versatile Master of Rotterdam
Marius Johannes Richters was a Dutch artist whose creative reach extended across numerous disciplines. Trained at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts, he became a prolific painter, draftsman, and graphic artist. His work often captured the essence of his home city, specifically through his depictions of haventaferelen (harbor scenes) and the polder landscapes surrounding Rotterdam. Beyond the canvas, Richters was a skilled etcher, wood engraver, and lithographer, producing everything from religious prints to political cartoons. His technical mastery also found expression in glass painting, where he designed intricate stained-glass windows for various churches, including the Zuiderkerk and the Sint-Janskerk.
