The Artistic Journey of Luise Kaish
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1925, Luise Kaish was an American artist whose creative practice spanned sculpture, painting, and collage. After earning her BFA from Syracuse University in 1946, she traveled to Mexico City, where she worked at the Taller de Gráfica Popular and attended the Escuela de Pintura y Escultura. She later obtained her MFA from Syracuse University, studying under the sculptor Ivan Meštrović. Her early career included significant sculptural works, such as a bronze sculpture of The Saltine Warrior for Syracuse University and the stone carving Mother and Child, which was featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's American Sculpture exhibition.
Kaish’s work expanded through international study in Italy, including time at the Istituto Statale d'Arte di Firenze and later in Rome. Her sculptural commissions were often monumental, utilizing bronze, aluminum, and stainless steel to create pieces like the ark doors for Temple B'rith Kodesh in Rochester, New York, and Christ in Glory for the Holy Trinity Mission Seminary in Maryland. In the 1970s, she transitioned toward painting and collage, employing techniques such as layering, tearing, and burning canvas to create textured reliefs.
