Early Life, Family and Training

Igo Pötsch was born on May 29, 1884, in Graz, Styria. He grew up as the son of an officer, a background that shaped his early years in the region. His hands first learned the discipline of line and form through a drawing course at the Landeskunstschule in Graz, which he attended starting in 1898/99.

The training continued as he moved into more specialized instruction. From 1900 to 1903, Pötsch studied at the private art school of Schad-Rossa. This period of study placed him under the influence of a teacher who had been a student of Defregger, grounding his technical development in established traditions of composition and draftsmanship.

Professional Career in Dresden and Vienna

In 1904, Pötsch moved to Dresden to work as a lithograph. This period of technical practice preceded a long tenure in Vienna, where he served as the artistic director for the Nußdorfer Papier- und Blechdruck-Industrie from 1905 to 1914. During these years, his focus settled on the production of colored lithographic posters. He refined these technical skills by completing a special course for lithography at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna.

His relationship with the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt continued in a different capacity later in his life. Between 1926 and 1928, he returned to the institution to work as a teacher for lithography. His expertise in the medium eventually took him to Leipzig, where in 1930 he led special courses for lithography at the Akademie für graphische Künste.

Artistic Affiliations and Recognition

By 1924, Pötsch had begun to show his work through the Genossenschaft der bildenden Künstler Wiens, known as the Künstlerhaus. His presence within this institution grew steadily over the following years. He became a formal member of the Künstlerhaus in 1930. Shortly after, in 1931, he joined other artists to become a co-founder of the new group of the Wiener Künstlergenossenschaft.

His standing within the Viennese art community was marked by specific honors and administrative responsibilities. In 1937, he received the Julius-Reich-Preis. His involvement with the Künstlerhaus eventually moved from the exhibition floor to its management; from 1938 until 1943, he held the position of exhibition director for the institution.
