A Life of Devotional Artistry
Born in Vannes, France, Adèle de Kercado was a prolific French copyist who maintained an active artistic career from at least the late 1830s until around 1860. Coming from an affluent Breton family, her life was marked by the shifting fortunes of her family's colonial holdings in Saint-Domingue. Her professional output focused on reproducing Old Master religious paintings. Notable commissions included:
Artistic Legacy and Final Years
De Kercado's skill as a copyist was recognized by the French state, which provided her with financial assistance through the Secours et encouragements aux artistes series. Her work was widely disseminated across provincial institutions, serving as a vital link to classical religious imagery. In addition to her religious reproductions, she produced several versions of a Pietà with Saint Francis and Mary Magdalene, after Carracci, which were sent to various churches including Marsac-sur-l'Isle, Navarrenx, Brécey, and Gimel-les-Cascades.
In her later years, she resided in the Batignolles-Monceau neighbourhood of Paris. Adèle de Kercado passed away at her home on the rue du Havre and was buried in the Cimetière de Montparnasse.
