The Spectacle is an ambitious site-specific installation comprised of seating, lighting and sculpture. Situated in a busy thoroughfare for pedestrians, these striking visual devices perform collectively as a meeting place, or somewhere to pause. Highly stylized colours and motifs are borrowed from the language of foodstuffs and confectionary. Glossy, synthetic ‘skins’ of paint give the work a colourful pop status, a chameleon appearance and an almost edible quality. The work is a coming together of natural forms and saccharine colours, generating a dynamic physical presence in the urban landscape.

Om kunstneren

The Edible Aesthetic: The Sculptural World of Jonathan Trayte

In the intersection where the visceral reality of nature meets the glossy artifice of consumerism, lies the captivating work of Jonathan Trayte. Born in Huddersfield, United Kingdom, in 1980, Trayte has emerged as a singular voice in contemporary sculpture, crafting objects that exist in a liminal space between functional furniture and surrealist dreamscapes. His practice is an evocative exploration of desire, utilizing the language of food and packaging to interrogate how we perceive, consume, and ultimately value the world around us. To encounter a Trayte piece is to experience a sensory dissonance; one is drawn to the seductive, saccharine colors and smooth, synthetic skins, yet remains intellectually tethered to the organic forms—fruits, vegetables, and botanical motifs—that he so meticulously reimagines.

Trayte’s artistic evolution is deeply rooted in a rigorous academic foundation. He honed his technical mastery at the Kent Institute of Art and Design, earning his BFA in 2004, before refining his conceptual depth through a postgraduate diploma in Fine Art from the prestigious Royal Academy Schools in London in 2010. This dual grounding allowed him to merge high-level sculptural technique with a profound philosophical inquiry. His background is uniquely multifaceted; having worked as both a chef and a foundry metal worker, he brings an intimate, tactile understanding of materials and organic matter to his studio. This rare combination of culinary sensibility and metallurgical skill enables him to create works that possess an almost "edible" quality, where bronze, resin, and ceramics are transformed into textures that mimic the succulent or the decaying.

Materiality and the Language of Consumption

The brilliance of Trayte’s work lies in his ability to manipulate materials to serve a larger conceptual narrative. He does not merely replicate the forms of nature; he uses castings and facsimiles to examine the ways in which global resources are manipulated and marketed. His sculptural practice is characterized by an ambitious engagement with bronze, resin, and ceramics, often layered with meticulous attention to detail to create a "chameleon" appearance. By applying glossy, synthetic finishes reminiscent of food packaging, he mirrors the seductive tactics of the global food industry—an industry designed to entice through visual perfection and artificial luster.

This interplay of textures serves as a profound commentary on modern life. In his celebrated installation The Spectacle, Trayte utilized seating, lighting, and sculpture to create a site-specific environment that functioned as both a public meeting place and a provocative art piece. Through the use of highly stylized colors borrowed from confectionery, he transformed urban spaces into landscapes of pop-art vibrancy. His work often draws inspiration from Surrealist aesthetics and the bold, experimental spirit of designers like Ettore Sottsass, blending the boundaries between fine art, industrial design, and the organic world to challenge the viewer's perception of what an everyday object can be.

A Legacy of Global Presence

Trayte’s journey has been marked by a series of significant international milestones that have cemented his reputation within the contemporary art canon. His exhibitions have spanned the globe, from the high-concept galleries of New York, such as Friedman Benda, to prestigious public displays like Sculpture in the City in London. These presentations have allowed him to explore themes of desire and consumption on a grand scale, engaging audiences with pieces that are as intellectually stimulating as they are visually arresting.

The historical significance of his work resides in its ability to bridge the gap between the high art of sculpture and the low culture of mass consumption. As he continues to live and work between London and Margate, Trayte remains a vital observer of the human condition, using the tools of the foundry and the palette of the confectioner to document our complex relationship with the planet's resources. His achievements include:

  • Notable Exhibitions: Showcasing works in major international venues including Akara Contemporary in Mumbai, Nilufar Gallery in Milan, and the Design Museum in London.
  • Conceptual Innovation: The successful integration of culinary motifs with heavy sculptural media like bronze and concrete to critique consumer psychology.
  • Academic Excellence: A distinguished pedigree from the Royal Academy Schools, contributing to a sophisticated mastery of both form and finish.
