As the eldest son of Peter Gumley, a respected cabinetmaker, his very identity was forged in the scent of sawdust and the precision of the chisel. This familial foundation provided him with the technical mastery required to navigate the complex aesthetic demands of the British aristocracy, allowing him to evolve from a skilled artisan into a celebrated figure of the decorative arts.
