Om kunstneren

The Sculpted Resilience of Hiba Alansari

Born in the vibrant yet complex landscape of Tripoli, Libya, in 1983, Hiba Alansari has emerged as a profound voice in contemporary art, weaving a narrative that speaks to the very essence of human endurance. Her artistic journey is not merely a chronicle of technical mastery but a deeply personal exploration of identity, shaped by the turbulent socio-political shifts of her upbringing. This formative period instilled in her a fascination with the duality of existence—the tension between destruction and construction, and the persistent impulse toward resistance. Her early years provided the emotional palette from which she draws, allowing her to transform the scars of conflict into a sophisticated visual language that resonates far beyond the borders of the Middle East.

Alansari’s formal evolution is marked by a rigorous pursuit of excellence across different continents and disciplines. Her academic foundation was laid in Damascus, Syria, at the Adham Ismail and Walid Ezzat Institute for Fine Arts between 2005 and 2008. It was here that she honed her command over painting, a skill that would later serve as a vital layer in her multidisciplinary approach. This period of intense study culminated in a Bachelor’s degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Damascus in 2012. Seeking to expand her expressive boundaries, she moved toward the tactile world of three-dimensional form, pursuing postgraduate studies at the prestigious Munich Academy of Fine Arts under the mentorship of Professor Gregor Schneider. By 2017, her dedication resulted in a Diploma that solidified her identity as a sculptor capable of navigating both the delicate and the monumental.

A Language of Form and Fragment

The work of Hiba Alansarium is characterized by an evocative interplay between materials and meaning. As a multidisciplinary artist, she seamlessly transitions between sculpture, installation, and painting, often utilizing mixed media to create textures that feel both ancient and urgently modern. Her practice frequently explores the concept of fragmentation—using broken or reconstructed elements to mirror the fractured nature of memory and political upheaval. In pieces such as her untitled mixed-media works, one might observe a captivating blend of quilting techniques, dark, haunting facial imagery, and vibrant hues that clash against rustic frames, creating a surrealist atmosphere that invites deep psychological inquiry.

Her thematic preoccupations often revolve around the following elements:

  • The Duality of Destruction and Construction: Examining how new identities and structures are built from the ruins of the old.
  • Political Trauma and Memory: Using sculptural installations to confront the visceral reality of violence and the lasting impact of war.
  • Mathematical Precision vs. Emotive Chaos: A stylistic hallmark seen in her explorations of geometric order juxtaposed with raw, human emotion.

Global Recognition and Artistic Legacy

Alansari’s ascent within the international art community has been marked by significant milestones that place her at the center of contemporary artistic discourse. Her inclusion in the prestigious Venice Biennale in 2015 served as a definitive moment, introducing her poignant explorations of trauma to a global audience. Her solo exhibitions have further cemented her reputation; for instance, ‘The Math Book’ at Ashkal Alwan in Beirut allowed her to experiment with the intersection of logic and feeling, while her presentation at Shedhalle, Rote Fabrik in Zurich, challenged viewers to contemplate the physical presence of sculptural installations within a conceptual space.

Beyond the gallery walls, her talent has been recognized through numerous prestigious scholarships and residencies, including support from The Goethe Institute, The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC), and Ettijahat – Independent Culture. Through these opportunities, Alansari continues to refine a body of work that serves as both a witness to history and a testament to the indomitable spirit of creation. Her significance lies in her ability to transform the heavy weight of political reality into an aesthetic experience that is as beautiful as it is unsettling, ensuring her place as a vital figure in the landscape of modern Middle Eastern art.
