Air Floating Media imagines future Japan where individuality and diversity are more respected than today. And it expresses ‘food for individuals to enjoy hobbies’, and ‘food to enjoy favorite contents’ beyond ‘food to live’. The artist constructed the information like calories of food and contents that he loves through AR (Augmented Reality). The work realizes not AR which technically requires glasses or smartphones, but AR of a new form which can be experienced with naked eyes. Noriyuki Juni has been conducting research and investigation on human interface. Since 2011, he has especially focused in creating images in the environment or midair. By calling this technology Air Floating Media, he has been active in utilizing it as the new display medium. He is currently CEO of Air Floating Media Committee, visiting professor of Osaka University of Arts, and executive of Parity Innovations Co. Ltd. And CEO of ViREM LLC.

Om kunstneren

The Architect of Augmented Realities

In the vibrant, neon-soaked landscape of contemporary Japanese culture, Noriyuki Juni emerges as a visionary bridge between the tangible and the ephemeral. Born in Osaka in 2013, Juni—often operating under the moniker air floating media—has cultivated an artistic practice that defies the traditional boundaries of physical medium. His work is not merely observed; it is inhabited. By weaving together the threads of sculptural installation and cutting-edge augmented reality (AR), Juni invites his audience into a liminal space where the solid world dissolves into digital projections, prompting a profound reconsideration of how we perceive our surroundings.

The genesis of Juni’s aesthetic can be traced to an early fascination with cyberpunk aesthetics and the philosophical weight of simulated environments. This preoccupation with the "glitch" between reality and simulation has become the cornerstone of his creative identity. His journey is marked by a relentless pursuit of new human interfaces, seeking ways to manifest digital information within our physical atmosphere. Through this lens, Juni explores themes of identity, connection, and the transformative power of technology, treating the very air around us as a canvas for digital expression.

Technique and the Immersive Experience

What distinguishes Juni’s methodology is his rejection of the screen-bound limitations of traditional augmented reality. While much of modern AR relies on the mediation of smartphones or cumbersome headsets, Juni strives for a more seamless integration—a form of "naked eye" AR that seeks to project information directly into the viewer's spatial perception. His technique involves the meticulous orchestration of light, shadow, and intricate geometric forms to create multidimensional installations that stimulate both visual and emotional engagement.

His approach is deeply rooted in the concept of Air Floating Media, a term he uses to describe his research into creating images that appear to hover within the environment or midair. This technique allows for a unique interplay between the physical weight of sculptural elements and the weightless nature of projected imagery. The result is an immersive dialogue where the viewer is no longer a passive observer but an active participant in a shifting, interactive landscape. In these spaces, the boundaries of the tangible world are deliberately blurred to encourage a deeper contemplation on how digital interfaces shape our very existence.

Visionary Projects and Future Horizons

The significance of Juni’s work is perhaps most vividly realized in his collaborative endeavors, which extend the reach of his art into the realms of daily human experience. One of his most notable achievements includes a collaboration with Under The Sea on the project titled “Future Food Experiences Using Augmented Reality.” In this installation, Juni reimagined the concept of dining for a future Japan—a society where individuality and diversity are celebrated through personalized digital layers. By overlaying nutritional information and personal interests onto the physical act of eating, he transformed a mundane biological necessity into a curated, multidimentional event.

Beyond his artistic installations, Juni’s influence extends into the academic and corporate sectors, reflecting his role as a leader in the evolution of human-computer interaction. His multifaceted career includes roles such as:

  • CEO of Air Floating Media Committee, driving the conceptual development of new display mediums.
  • Visiting Professor at Osaka University of Arts, where he contributes to the academic discourse on digital integration.
  • Executive of Parity Innovations Co. Ltd. and CEO of ViREM LLC, bridging the gap between artistic vision and technological implementation.

As we move further into an era defined by the convergence of the physical and the virtual, Noriyuki Juni stands as a pivotal figure. His work serves as both a mirror to our technologically saturated present and a window into a future where the digital and the organic are inextricably, and beautifully, entwined.
