The Artistic Evolution of Josef Danner
Josef Danner was an Austrian painter and graphic artist. His creative practice encompassed a wide range of mediums, including drawing, printmaking, and poster projects. Throughout his career, his work transitioned from gestural-figurative styles and complete abstraction toward a unique visual language. This later period of his work incorporated graphic elements, symbols, and cryptic iconography, often accompanied by texts that were either sharp-tongued or humorously ironic. His thematic focus frequently reflected social, mental, and cultural-historical currents.
His diverse body of work included large-scale paintings, screenprints, and large-format drawings. Danner also engaged in public art through large poster series and Kunst am Bau projects. His artistic output is represented in various collections, including those of the MUMOK, the Albertina, the Lentos, the Museum Stift Admont, and the state collections of Lower Austria and Burgenland, as well as in the cities of Vienna, Graz, and Eisenstadt.
