The Life and Art of Jacques de Lalaing
Born in London, United Kingdom, Jacques de Lalaing was an Anglo-Belgian painter, sculptor, and photographer. The son of Count Maximilien IV de Lalaing, he was raised in England before moving to Brussels in 1875. His artistic training took place at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, where he studied under Jean-François Portaels and Louis Gallait. As a painter, he worked in a realistic, naturalistic style, focusing on portraiture and historical scenes. He also began sculpting in 1884, following the encouragement of Thomas Vinçotte and Jef Lambeaux.
Lalaing's sculptural work included allegorical bronzes and memorial art. Alongside Léon Mignon and Antoine-Félix Bouré, he helped establish a Belgian tradition of animal art, drawing inspiration from the Antwerp Zoo.
