His early professional life included working as a traveling leather goods salesman and operating a shop where he provided portrait sketches to customers. Following a period of personal hardship and a depressive crisis that led him to destroy many of his early works, Benner began a new artistic chapter in Leeuwarden in 1945. His work eventually gained significant recognition, leading to exhibitions in cities such as Groningen and Amsterdam, and participation in international events like the Biennale in São Paulo.

Benner's oeuvre is characterized by a progression in technique and subject matter. His early works featured a dark and melancholy color palette, often focusing on themes such as sailing boats, water, the sky, and red horses.
