After moving to Dallas to study at the Dallas Art Institute, he was introduced to various artistic movements, including Post-Impressionism and Cubism, as well as the styles of the Quattrocento. His education under Olin Travis provided him with a foundation in color, form, and perspective.

Spruce was a painter and printmaker whose work often focused on landscape themes. He served at the Dallas Museum of Art and later joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin, where he eventually served as a professor and Director of Graduate Studio Art.
