With the effort to spread education outside schools of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture which got underway during the Meiji era, many Nishiki-e (colored woodblock prints) with educational themes including moral education and western inventions were published. This Nishiki-e introduces the readings of English language script and simple English vocabulary. When we look more closely we see that the spelling is off and that German words are intermingled, which may raise some laughs, but it nevertheless vividly evokes the sense that these kinds of colorful and profound educational Nishiki-e were preternaturally suited to learning enjoyably. The creator, Utagawa Yoshitora, the second most popular painter in the popularity ranking at the start of the Meiji Period after Kuniteru Utagawa, is particularly famous for Musha-e pictures of warriors in combat and Okubi-e bust portraits of actors, but also turned his hand to a number of illustrations of this kind.
