Tradicionalmente considerado, y así publicado en diversas ocasiones, como de Teodosio Sánchez de Rueda, hemos de hacer algunas consideraciones en torno a la autoría de este Proyecto del Retablo mayor de la Ermita del Socorro de Córdoba, ya que, analizados algunos datos relacionados con el retablo, consideramos que habría que poner en duda la segura catalogación dentro de la producción del granadino Sánchez de Rueda.El referido Sánchez de Rueda contrata el 7 de febrero de 1718 con Salvador Ruiz de Almoguera, hermano mayor de la Hermandad del Socorro de Córdoba, la ejecución del retablo mayor de la actual ermita del Socorro por un total de 7700 reales, según lo establecido en la escritura cuyo análisis puede aportarnos interesantes pautas tendentes a ir aclarando la historia de este retablo; en dicha escritura, se encuentran estipuladas las cláusulas habituales y a ellas habría que atenerse Teodosio Sánchez a la hora de ejecutar la obra.Pese a ello, hemos de tener en cuenta otras cosas, partiendo de un interesante dato aportado por el referido contrato: la existencia de una traza previa, de autor no mencionado, que se debía exhibir a la puerta del hospital de San José y San Pedro ad Vincula, junto a la Corredera, a fin de que los asistentes hicieran sus pujar para la adjudicación definitiva de la ejecución del retablo, que se efectúa a su contrincante Juan del Río.El dibujo con traza del retablo a que hace referencia el contrato habría que pensar que pudiera ser este que estudiamos y, si es así, ciertamente, no hay constancia de que el maestro granadino sea su autor. Se ha barajado también la posibilidad de que esta traza se deba al mencionado Juan del Río, del que no conocemos ningún dibujo, aunque sí su participación en algunos otros retablos y su trabajo ocasionalmente junto a Teodosio Sánchez de Rueda. Es, por tanto, difícil conocer el autor de la obra que nos ocupa, que, por esta causa, deberíamos considerar de un artista cordobés activo en 1718, que podría identificarse con Sánchez de Rueda o del Río.En la ejecución, se siguieron las pautas dadas en las estipulaciones del contrato y en la traza aportada por la Hermandad a Sánchez de Rueda para la obra. Sin embargo, habría que considerar que este retablo aporta unos elementos constructivos y estéticos más retardarios que otros del artista en la misma Córdoba.Por todo ello, es difícil determinar definitivamente una autoría para el dibujo. Hemos mencionado para los trabajos vistos varios nombre: un anónimo maestro que ejecutó la traza que, en 1718, fue llevada a la realidad por Sánchez de Rueda y, en cuya postura de 8000 reales fue rechazada ante la baja de 300 reales de Teodosio Sánchez.
