Ze staat bekend als een pionier binnen de architectuur van het laat-20ste en begin-21ste eeuw en wordt beschouwd als een van de meest invloedrijke vrouwen in haar vakgebied.
Hadid werd geboren in Bagdad, Irak, dochter van Muhammad al-Hajj Husayn Hadid, een succesvolle industrieel en politicus, en Wajiha al-Sabunji, die een passie voor kunst ontwikkelde.
