Life and Artistic Education

Matilda Čechová was a Slovak painter, graphic artist, visual artist, and art educator. Born in Čičmany, Slovakia, she spent time living in South Tyrol with her family before returning to live between Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Her formal artistic training was extensive, beginning at a Teacher's Institute in Martin and continuing at the School of Artistic Crafts. She furthered her studies at the Department of Drawing and Painting at the Slovak University of Technology and the Pedagogical Faculty in Bratislava. A significant period in her development occurred between 1947 and 1948, when she attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome under Mina Maccari during a study trip to Italy.

Artistic Focus and Affiliations

Her creative work was inspired by landscapes, folklore, and the lives of rural people, with the Orava region providing significant motifs for her landscape paintings. Beyond her own production in painting, graphics, drawing, and textile techniques, she was an active collector of folk art, including ceramics, embroidery, sculptures, and glass paintings. Her professional involvement included memberships in several groups, such as Hollar, Umelecká beseda slovenská, Skupina výtvarných umelcov 29. augusta, ZSVU, and the Association of Graphic Artists and Friends of Graphics. Additionally, she served as a teacher at the Vocational School for Women's Professions in Bratislava.
