Born in Zaandam in 1903, Kees Timmer was a prolific Dutch artist whose creative reach extended across numerous disciplines. He was a sculptor, graphic artist, monumental artist, wall painter, painter, draftsman, jeweler, and mosaicist. After settling in Rotterdam in 1923, he refined his skills through evening art classes at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten, where he studied painting under Herman Mees and drawing under David Bautz. His technical proficiency was recognized early on when he was awarded the Silver Academy Medal in 1928.
During the 1920s, Timmer focused on producing payable art, often turning his attention to subjects such as monkeys and the circus. His repertoire also included figurative animal painting, as well as portraits and self-portraits. In later stages of his career, his work expanded into the creation of murals for factories and schools, alongside the construction of sculptures made from metal and concrete.
Timmer's contributions to the Dutch art scene were marked by several significant milestones. His work was featured in the 1939 exhibition Onze Kunst van Heden at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. His expertise in anatomy and form was further demonstrated when he lectured on head and figure study at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague during 1962-63. In 1966, he was honored with the Hendrik Chabot Prize.
Throughout his life, Timmer remained deeply connected to the city of Rotterdam. His artistic legacy was celebrated in 1993 when the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen held a major retrospective of his paintings. He passed away in Rotterdam in 1978.
