A Pioneer of Argentine Animalism

Julia Wernicke was an Argentine painter and engraver who holds a unique place in art history as the first animalist painter from Argentina. Her work is distinguished by its focus on exotic animals, a subject matter that set her apart from her contemporaries. Through her friendship with Eduardo Holmberg, the Director of the Buenos Aires Zoological Garden, she gained access to the gardens to paint lions, tigers, and gorillas directly from life. This dedication to capturing wild creatures was a departure from the more common studies of domestic animals in Argentina at the time.

Her artistic journey included significant periods of study in Europe. Around 1885, she traveled to Munich, Germany, where she studied under the animal painter Heinrich von Zügel. Later, her interests expanded into the technical complexities of engraving, leading her to live in Leipzig, Berlin, and Dresden. There, she explored various methods including etching, woodcut, aquatint, drypoint, and lithography.

Exhibitions and Recognition

Wernicke achieved several milestones for women artists in Argentina. In 1897, she held a solo exhibition in Buenos Aires, which may have been the first individual exhibition by a woman artist in the city. Her work was also featured in the 1898 Exposición Nacional, where she presented pieces within the Feminist Section. During this period, her painting Toros (also known as Los Toritos) gained significant recognition and became part of the archives at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes.

Her international presence was marked by a bronze medal at the Saint Louis Exposition of 1904. In 1909, she returned to the forefront of the local art scene with a solo exhibition of engraved etchings at the Galería Witcomb, marking the first individual exhibit of its kind in Argentina. Her artistic legacy is preserved through collections such as the Museo Castagnino of Rosario and the works she contributed to the history of Argentine art.
