A Life of Artistic Pursuit

Born in Chicoutimi, Canada, Georges Saint-Pierre was a painter who found his early inspiration while spending time in his uncle's art gallery. It was there that he discovered the works of great Quebecois painters. Following the death of his father when he was twelve, he traveled to Montreal between 1948 and 1958. Although he was refused entry to the École des beaux-arts de Montréal, he was eventually initiated into painting by Paul Gagnon. After a period of time, he chose to establish himself in Quebec City.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Saint-Pierre became known in the Quebec art scene for his itinerant lifestyle, moving from place to place to paint. His work was described by Lyse Nantais in a 1961 chronicle in Le Devoir as part of a movement called misérabilisme. He also spent time living on Île d'Orléans. His artistic legacy includes works such as Bataille de rue and Le Nyctalope, both held in the Musée Des Beaux, Québec City.

Legacy and Recognition

Saint-Pierre's career included a significant exhibition at the Musée du Québec from January 23 to February 23, 1975. His paintings often depicted Quebecois legends, such as La Chasse-galerie or les feux follets. His works are held in several collections, including:

In 2010, a commemorative exhibition was organized at the Salle Albert-Rousseau to mark the 25th anniversary of his death. His daughter, Marie-Émilie, attended this anniversary exhibition.
