Jis atsisakė eterinės piktorializmo savybės, vietoj to priimdamas „tiesioginės fotografijos“ estetiką – pasižinčiantį aštriu fokusu, tiksliu detaliu ir neapvainiojimu realybės.

Antrojo pasaulinio karo metu Steichenas tarnavo savo priimtai šakei režisuodamas „The Fighting Lady“ (1944) – pripažintą dokumentinį filmą JAV karo laivynui, kuris pasi offered visceralų oro mūšio vaizdą. Tačiau galbūt jo stipriausias palikimas slypi 1955 metais MoMA eksponuojamoje parodoje „The Family of Man“.

O „The Family of Man“, su jo ž 메시ja apie bendrą žmoniję, išlieka itin aktualus vis dar stiprėjančiame fragmentuotame pasaulyje.
