Zak Prekop was born in 1979 in Chicago. His formative years in the American Midwest provided the foundation for a career defined by a rigorous engagement with the formal properties of painting. He began his professional training at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2001.

Following his undergraduate studies, Prekop returned to his roots to pursue advanced studies in the city of his birth. He attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, eventually receiving a Master of Fine Arts in 2008. This period of study helped refine the technical precision and conceptual depth that would characterize his later practice.

His academic trajectory eventually took him to Europe, where he expanded his perspective through international study. In 2009, Prekop spent time in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, as a guest student at the Staedelschule. This exposure to different European traditions contributed to the sophisticated, layered approach he would later bring to his nonrepresentational works.

Technique and Artistic Style

Prekop’s practice is rooted in the physical presence of paint and the specific qualities of his chosen materials. He favors muslin over linen, a choice that facilitates his interest in transparency and the interplay between the front and back of a support. Through meticulous recto/verso investigations, he often applies pigment to the reverse side of the fabric, allowing colors to emerge as ghostly, diffused shapes when viewed from the front. This method creates a tension between the visible surface and the hidden layers beneath, complicating the viewer's understanding of depth and presence.

His compositions are built through a process of layering that balances spontaneous gestures with decisive, controlled mark-making. He frequently employs a palette knife to spread spackling white paint, creating surfaces that possess a distinct materiality. He presented solo work at Galería Marta Cervera in Madrid, Spain, in 2022, and later exhibited at the Maxwell Graham Gallery in New York, NY, in 2024.
