A Life in Form and Light
Born in Toronto, Canada, Walter Tandy Murch was a painter, draftsperson, illustrator, and designer. His artistic journey began at the Ontario College of Art, where he studied under Arthur Lismer. Seeking further development, he moved to New York City in 1927 to study at the Art Students League of New York under Kenneth Hayes Miller and later with Arshile Gorky at the Grand Central School of Art.
Throughout his career, Murch engaged in various professional roles, including department-store window design, book illustration, restaurant murals, and freelance illustrations for magazines such as Fortune and Scientific American. He also worked on advertising commissions. In 1941, he had his first one-man exhibition at the Wakefield Gallery in New York City, presented by Betty Parsons. He later became associated with the Betty Parsons Gallery, mounting one-man shows there every two years until his death in New York City.
Artistic Style and Legacy
Murch's paintings are characterized by an unusual combination of realism and abstraction. His subject matter often featured an eccentric juxtaposition of objects, such as:
His technique involved painting objects as though they were being viewed through frosted glass, creating a sense of ambiguity between the depicted objects and the broken, pitted surfaces of the work. Beyond his studio practice, Murch was an educator, teaching at the Pratt Institute, New York University, Columbia University, and Boston University. He was the father of sound designer and film editor Walter Scott Murch and Louise Tandy Schablein.
