The Life and Art of Rosalia Amon

Rosalia Amon was an Austrian painter of the Viennese Biedermeier period. Born in Palermo, Italy, she later lived in Vienna, where she received private lessons from Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller. Amon specialized in flower painting, a focus that reportedly led her teacher to gradually abandon the genre out of consideration for her talent. Between 1841 and 1847, she exhibited her work at the annual exhibitions of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, presenting a variety of subjects including still lifes, portraits, landscapes with staffage, and genre scenes.

Her oil paintings attracted prominent buyers, including the imperial family and other members of the nobility. While she created small, simple bouquets for the homes of the Viennese bourgeoisie, her more significant works were recognized by her contemporaries. In 1844, she was judged as a worthy successor to the painter Pauline von Koudelka. Despite her recognition during her lifetime, she was often viewed in the 20th century primarily as a student of Waldmüller.
