Early Life, Family and Training
Willem Anton Leefsma, known as Pim Leefsma, enters the world in Gouda on July 7, 1947. He is born into a creative environment, the son of Nathan Leefsma and the Gouda painter Rini Nagtegaal. This lineage places him within a specific local tradition of visual expression from his earliest years.
The trajectory of his formal training begins in 1965. He moves to The Hague to study at the Vrije Academie, remaining there until 1970. This five-year period of study marks the transition from his upbringing in Gouda to the professional development of his skills as a painter, draftsman, and sculptor.
Recognition follows the completion of his studies. In 1970, he receives the Geert Bouwmeesterprijs for his work. This period of early success is further marked by the Aanmoedigingsprijs of the Municipality of Gouda, an award that acknowledges his emerging talent within his home city.
Artistic Techniques and Style
Leefsma operates across multiple dimensions, refusing to remain confined to the flat plane. His practice shifts between the precision of a draftsman and the tactile presence of a sculptor. He moves from the two-dimensional surface of a painting to the physical weight of three-dimensional objects, treating space as a medium as much as pigment or ink. This versatility defines his output as a visual artist, where the boundary between a drawing and a sculptural form often blurs.
His approach to form is characterized by this refusal to settle. While his training provided a foundation in traditional methods, his execution often moves into the realm of the object. He applies his expressive language to physical structures, transforming abstract concepts into tangible, three-dimensional realities. This transition from the page to the object allows his work to occupy the same physical environment as the viewer, moving beyond the mere representation of form into the creation of actual volume.
Key Works and Commissions
In 1988, Leefsma moved beyond the flat surface to address the urban landscape of Gouda. He designed a large-scale object for the expansion of the police station located at Houtmansgracht. This work, characterized by its intense use of color, occupied the corner where Houtmansgracht meets Paradijs. Because of this specific placement and its polychromatic nature, the piece became known as De Paradijsvogel.
The presence of De Paradijsvogel was tied to the functional life of the building. When the police station was converted into an apartment complex in 2015, the object was removed. The work was subsequently destroyed, leaving no physical trace of the installation in its original urban setting.
Exhibitions and International Presence
Leefsma’s reach extends far beyond the borders of the Netherlands. His work travels from the local galleries of his birthplace to international stages, finding placement in both solo and group exhibitions. In the United States, his presence is marked by exhibitions at the Franz Bader Gallery in Washington D.C. This international footprint continues in Europe, where his pieces have been displayed at the Institut Neerlandais in Paris.
Within the Netherlands, his exhibition history spans significant institutions and regional spaces. He has exhibited at the Cobra museum in Amstelveen and the Stedelijk Museum in Gouda. His work also finds a home in the Stadsgalerie in Gouda. These displays reflect a career that moves between the specialized focus of museum settings and the communal atmosphere of local galleries.
