The Artistic Journey of Morton Kaish
Morton Kaish was an American artist whose creative practice integrated the abstract and the figurative. Born in Newark, New Jersey, he attended Syracuse University's College of Fine Arts, where his studies coincided with a shift toward Abstraction. During World War II, Kaish served in the U.S. Maritime Service, working as a base artist at the Sheepshead Bay Maritime Training Center and later serving on missions to Europe. Following his service, he traveled extensively throughout Europe during the 1950s, studying at institutions such as the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, the Istituto statale d'arte in Florence, and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome.
In addition to his work as a painter and printmaker, Kaish had a successful career as a fashion illustrator for publications including Harper's Bazaar, Esquire, and Lord & Taylor. His artistic themes often explored urban architecture, American landscapes, and the figure.
