A Life Shaped by Color and Movement

Mary Stoddard began her life in Edinburgh, Scotland, born into a family where the brush and the lens were part of daily existence. Her father, Peter Devine, was a portrait painter and photographer who shared his technical knowledge with Mary and her two sisters, Katie and Eliza. This early training provided a foundation of precision that would stay with her throughout her years in different corners of the globe. In 1875, she married Frederick Wahab Stoddard, and together they moved to New Zealand to attempt a life of farming.

The landscape changed again around 1880 when the couple settled in Sydney, Australia. It was here that Mary found her place within the local art community. She joined the Art Society of New South Wales, where she became a regular presence in annual exhibitions. Her life was one of constant motion, moving between the quietude of painting and the active role of an art teacher. By 1900, seeking better health and education for her children, she returned to London, where she passed away in Kensington in 1901.

The Artistry of Detail

Mary’s work was characterized by a careful finish and a sympathetic way of interpreting her subjects. She worked across various media, including oils, watercolour, gouache, and miniatures. While she was skilled in landscapes, figure studies, and seascapes, she often found her greatest success in the intimate realms of still life and portraiture. Her ability to capture fine details was something she inherited from her father’s miniature painting style.

Her paintings often reflected a sense of worldly knowledge. In 1889, she produced From earth and ocean, an oil on canvas that featured a nautilus shell alongside English roses and South African native plumbago. This piece demonstrated her ability to arrange natural objects into a composition that felt both studied and elegant. She also found great success with watercolours, such as Christmas Bells from 1886, which won a significant prize of 100 pounds. This particular work was later published as a colour supplement in the Illustrated Sydney News.

Recognition and Legacy

Throughout her career, Mary earned respect through various competitions and exhibitions. Her talent was recognized far beyond the borders of Australia. She exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy and the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. In 1898, her work was also seen by London audiences at the Exhibition of Australian Art at the Grafton Galleries.

Her portraits often captured the faces of prominent figures of her time. Notable subjects included:

  • Sir Henry Parkes, for whom she painted two portraits in 1891 and 1896
  • E. C. Merewether
  • J. T. Toohey
  • The wives of Governors Carrington and Hampden

Today, the traces of her skill remain in permanent collections. Her work can be found in the National Portrait Gallery in London, as well as the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the State Library of New South Wales. Through these pieces, the meticulousness of her technique and her eye for the natural world continue to be preserved.
