The Life and Art of Ma Tai
Ma Tai, also known by his names Tai Ma or 馬駘, was a painter born in 1886 in Xichang, Sichuan. Growing up in poverty, he developed a profound passion for calligraphy and painting, beginning his studies under the local artist Zhou Jingtang. Following the Xinhai Revolution, he traveled extensively through various regions, including Yunnan, Sichuan, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hebei, and Japan, spending over a decade studying the natural world and various artistic traditions. His diverse subject matter included landscapes, figures, flowers, trees, birds, animals, insects, and fish, blending ancient and modern techniques from both Chinese and Western traditions to establish his own unique style.
Beyond his visual works, Ma Tai was a scholar who studied Buddhist and Taoist philosophies. He was a prolific writer of art theory and collections, leaving behind several significant works such as Ma Tai Hua Wen, Zi Xi Hua Pu Da Quan (now known as Ma Tai Hua Bao), Qi Zhou Hua Sheng, Si Yan Hua Jue, and Qi Zhou Hua Ji. His mastery of diverse styles earned him the reputation of a "doctor of painting." He passed away in 1937.
