The Formative Years in London
The story of John Brinkworth begins in Brixton, United Kingdom, where he was born on September 10, 1920. His early life is defined by a rigorous immersion in the technical foundations of visual art. He did not simply wander into a studio; he moved through the established institutions of London, refining his eye and hand through formal training. His education spanned several significant institutions, each contributing to a disciplined approach to his craft.
His development was shaped by the structured environments of his training:
These years were spent mastering the physical properties of his chosen media. He worked with oil paint, watercolor, and pastel, learning how light interacts with different surfaces. This technical grounding allowed him to transition from a student of form to a practitioner of precise observation.
Subject and Technique
Brinkworth’s work finds its focus in the quiet observation of life. He gravitates toward two primary realms: the human face and the botanical arrangement. His portraits demand a careful understanding of anatomy and character, while his flower arrangements require a delicate touch to capture the fleeting nature of organic life. He moves between the heavy, layered application of oil and the fluid, transparent qualities of watercolor.
In 1979, his skill in capturing individual identity was evident in his portrait of Allard Philip Reinier Carel baron van der Borch van Verwolde (1926-2008). This work reflects a career spent looking closely at the world, whether it is the structure of a petal or the specific lines of a sitter's face. His practice remains rooted in the tradition of the draftsperson, where accuracy and the physical properties of the medium dictate the outcome of the work.
