Born in Morges, Switzerland, Jean-François Sablet emerged from a lineage deeply rooted in the art trade. As the son of Jacob Sablet, a painter and picture dealer, his early education was shaped by the intimate rhythms of a family dedicated to the canvas. This foundational training under his father provided him with the technical groundwork that would eventually lead him to the heart of the European art world. In 1772, seeking to expand his horizons beyond his Swiss origins, Sablet moved to Paris, a transition that would fundamentally alter the trajectory of his career and place him at the epicenter of Neoclassical evolution.

In Paris, Sablet sought formal refinement within the prestigious Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture. Studying under the esteemed Joseph-Marie Vien, he became part of a vibrant intellectual circle that included his younger brother, Jacques-Henri Sablet. While both brothers shared the same master, their artistic paths diverged in fascinating ways; while Jacques-Henri found renown in history and genre painting, Jean-François carved out a distinct reputation as a portraitist.
