A Life of Artistic Pursuit
Born in Leiden, Netherlands, Jan van Mieris was the eldest son of Frans van Mieris the Elder and Cunera van der Cocq. He began his artistic journey with a short apprenticeship in his father's atelier. While he was intended to study history painting under Gerard de Lairesse, his father chose a different path for him. His studies were also impacted by health issues involving kidney stones. In 1686, he became a member of the Leiden Guild of St. Luke, paying a reduced entry fee due to his status as the son of a master.
His life eventually took him toward Italy. In 1689, he wrote from Venice, expressing his health and his intention to travel to Florence. He was invited to the court of Cosimo III de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, though he was sent away for religious reasons. He eventually settled in Rome, where he was known among a group of young painters. He died in Rome at the age of 30.
