Born in Helsinki, Finland, Helmi Biese was a painter who dedicated much of her life to capturing the essence of the natural world. After attending a Swedish girls' school in Helsinki, she enrolled at the drawing school of the Finnish Art Society at the age of seventeen. To secure her livelihood, she trained as an art teacher at the private academy of Adolf von Becker between 1884 and 1888. Her early career saw her participating in an opposition exhibition organized by a group of young Finnish artists, including Gunnar Berndtson, Väinö Blomstedt, and Ellen Thesleff. Biese also contributed illustrations to the publication Nuori Suomi.

While she achieved success with a solo exhibition at Salon Strindberg in 1920, the unexpected death of her husband in 1925 necessitated her return to teaching at the Helsinki School of Applied Arts.
